Description
An extended sequence of material relevant to the Wessex Philharmonic Society, including a large amount of handwritten and printed correspondence (largely compiled by Maisie Aldridge) and a number of concert programmes.
The Wessex Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in November 1939 to given employment to a number of musicians who, owing to war-time circumstances, had lost their work. It was conducted by Reginald Goodall and included a number of ex-members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. In February 1942, the Wessex became officially associated with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
The sequence comprises two archive boxes (M39 and M40) and a number of variously sized boxes and folders (26D). For detailed records of the material held at D26, see the following individual entries.
